特殊人生的命运关注

  上世纪的90年代,贾玉川带着一双摄影家的眼睛从中原古都安阳只身来到深圳。深圳是改革开放的前沿,镜头所面对的由农村农民转变为酒吧股市商潮明星令人眼花缭乱的现代都市,在这种巨大反差带来的心理震撼中,他的摄影道路开始了新的选择。
  那个时期改革开放国门洞开社会转型,无限可能性的展开生发出无尽的诱惑,各种价值观念生活方式的冲突使社会变得无比复杂,被激流暗流涌动的时代大潮卷裹进去稍不留神或一次偶然,人生的轨迹就会是另一种描画。贾玉川长时间地游走在都市生活的底层,在芸芸众生普通民众之间包括晦暗隐秘之处,观察社会万象人生百态。从一次次偶然的相遇到好奇中的深入再到持之以恒的追踪,贾玉川最终把关注的重点放在了一些弱势群体或特殊境遇者身上。这一部分人大都存在于社会的边缘或公众的视线以外甚至偶尔的传言之中,他们被传统的、主流的、公众的文化价值观念所不容、不耻和不屑,是人们眼中的另类、败类,他们的存在是社会的隐私、毒瘤,还有一些是身陷困境的、令人绝望的生命。贾玉川的进入没有站在这种舆论立场和道德高度去揭露、批判社会的“阴暗面”,也没有过多地考虑自己的摄影“艺术”,他的拍摄动机是基于对不同寻常的生命状态和生活方式的了解的欲望,他始终以一种尊重、平和、善意的态度走进一个个拍摄对象,他被一个个独特的生命所吸引,被强烈的探究欲望所驱动,在经年累月的追踪拍摄中,他身不由己地伸出援手,为改变他们的命运而努力,这为他的摄影赋予了真正的人文意义。
  吸毒在中国几乎从来没有中断过,但是长期以来国家对此一直讳莫如深,直到上世纪90年代,才逐渐公开化,形成社会性的相关宣传、抵制、打击态势。2003年吸毒女阿丽走进了贾玉川镜头。他通过一位知情的美发师的讲述知道这位青春貌美带着手套的姑娘已深陷毒瘾经常静脉注射海洛因,戴手套是因为手指已经开始溃烂。当时随着毒品问题的揭露,人们才发现吸毒现象已经如此严重。一个年轻生命是怎样走上这条道路的?吸毒者的生活究竟是一个什么状态?贾玉川通过沟通获得了阿丽同意并签订了拍摄协议,开始走进阿丽的生活。阿丽的日常费用和毒资的来源是卖淫,常常为买毒品身无分文,住所狭小、阴暗、凌乱,没有正常的生活,自己注射毒品的情景让人心寒。得知贫困和痛苦中的阿丽有戒毒的愿望,贾玉川伸出援手,帮助阿丽作为自愿戒毒人员进入了戒毒所,其间多次看望。三个多月时间阿丽戒毒成功,有热心人人帮助阿丽联系了企业工作,吸毒女阿丽终于获得了新生。当时社会极为需要阿丽这样的典型,贾玉川《吸毒女阿丽的故事》摄影专题在报刊和展览中推出后引来强烈反响,阿丽的命运为更多的人所关注。然而阿丽已经不能适应每月数千元的正常人的生活,也摆脱不了毒友圈引诱,不久再次沦陷,贾玉川深感无奈和失望。
  贾玉川关注的另一个群体是同性恋者。对于同性恋贾玉川开始时感到不可思议怎么可能甚至恶心。他悄悄地接近了这个隐秘的圈子,跟他们结识,后来选择了三对经同意跟踪拍摄。一个是四十多岁动漫公司画家,有老婆孩子却爱上了另一个男人;一个反串演员(做“人妖”表演)来自农村的小伙;还有一个艺术家,也有孩子老婆,喜欢异装,把自己打扮成女人出去找刺激。他们“畸形”的爱情和“另类”的生活,在为社会所不容的恶劣环境中充满着各种难以想象的压力。走进他们生活的细节,走进他们心灵的深处,贾玉川对他们的认识和感情发生了很大的变化,从不可思议、难以接受到同情尊重、尽力相助并在一次次的感动中产生了由衷的敬佩之情。画家与恋人支付不起昂贵的手术费靠打针、吃雌性激素改变生理特征,一次在冲动中自己拿刀手术被送往医院抢救;艺术家经商赚钱有车有房仍然爱异装打扮;那位来自农村的反串演员从小缺少母爱,父亲被处死刑,他说她像妈妈一样照顾他的小男朋友,生活的压力他坚强承受,回到村里全村人都不理他也全然不顾,为了爱情他敢于面对一切,他的愿望就是在老家给父亲立个坟,去泰国看看真正的人妖。他们追求爱情的果敢和决绝,面对压力的坚持和坚强使都给贾玉川很大的震撼:“从他们身上我感到人的多面性,看到了一些人的特质,他们是非常勇敢的人,我钦佩他们。”
彭水林走进贾玉川的视野很偶然。一次在医院采访,听说这里住着一个因车祸盆骨以下都没有的人,他怎么能活下来?贾玉川瞬间感受到了一种生命力的强大。像通常的情况一样,身高只剩下60多公分、在病床上躺了一年多的“半截人”彭水林见到记者身份的贾玉川总是诉说困难,希望帮助。深具同情心的贾玉川没有给他送钱,在感慨于生命的强大和对生命的敬畏感中他从另一个角度伸出援手,再次来到医院送给彭水林的是一对哑铃。此后一方面帮助协调法院、医院解决了事故赔偿和医疗费用,一方面鼓励伤愈的彭水林树立重新开始新生活的信心和勇气,动员说服家属、医院、媒体共同伸出援手。彭水林终于走出了颓伤绝望,开始了自强不息的努力,贾玉川把彭水林的事迹推向社会,多家国外电视台作了报道,在贾玉川的倡导和串联下深圳与彭水林家乡长沙的媒体和爱心人士组织了持久的爱心接力,残联帮助彭水林开便利店解决了生活问题,国内外多家企业和医疗机构帮助彭水林安装假肢、继续治疗康复,全国残联主席邓朴方接见了彭水林。彭水林迅速成为走红全国的新闻人物,2006年贾玉川的《半截人彭水林的故事》获得了华赛新闻人物组照银奖。
  特殊的人生对于贾玉川来说具有巨大的魅力,吸引他走上了一条与众不同的摄影之路。从我国纪实摄影的通常表现来看,他不是一位猎手,隐蔽和突然地出手,不动声色地获取;不是满足自己一个个的视觉惊奇,串连成碎片的罗列;不是始终保持客观性警觉,详尽而冷静的“田野调查”,也不是借题发挥,构造与对象已经没有太大关系的影像图式。他是人生和人性的探秘者,他想看到一个个特殊的生命究竟如何的存在,看到特殊甚至极端的情况下这些生命如何表现,这时他是一位冷静的观察者、思考着,但是利他主义也是人的本质,贾玉川不可能在如此深入地接触和了解中对这些悲剧和悲惨的生活无动于衷,所以每一次他都是从冷静的观察到积极地介入,拍摄对象成为帮扶对象,实际上改变了对象的人生轨迹,这使他的摄影具有了实验的性质,这时他很像一位主张正义、扶弱济贫、为朋友两肋插刀的侠客,他多方奔走帮助阿丽进入戒毒所,帮助阿丽安排了工作,帮助那位做反串表演的小伙子联系了做变性手术的医生,他说服医院把彭水林作为救治典型树立医院形象免去了20多万元的医疗费并长期跟踪体检治疗,他往返深圳长沙之间建立起帮助彭水林的爱心接力,后来关于半截人彭水林的报道铺天盖地,多方关怀蜂拥而至,彭水林过上了正常的生活,家庭温暖幸福,贾玉川是第一推动、始作俑者。贾玉川发乎自然的侠义心肠恰恰契合了世界纪实摄影关心人类苦难,关心弱势群体,维护人的尊严的人道主义的传统,继承了人文关怀的思想精髓。美国摄影师堂娜·费拉多目睹一起家庭暴力事件后开始关注那些被丈夫毒打和家庭暴力伤害的女性,拍摄了大量的让人震撼的照片并发起成立反对家庭暴力的组织,用多种方式帮助遭受家庭不幸的妇女,为此她获得了尤金·史密斯人道主义摄影纪念金奖等重大国际纪实摄影奖。纪实摄影有着许多类型,但是像贾玉川、堂娜·费拉多这样的纪实摄影家尤其值得尊敬,他们把自己置身到事件之中,为改变对象的命运而战,摄影已不是主要的目的,仅仅是一个介入的由头和工具。其实,当他们的作用改变着对象的人生轨迹的时候,自己的人生轨迹也已经被改变。贾玉川为帮助彭水林的成功而欣慰,为救助阿丽的最终失败而悲伤,现在还在为反串演员的变性手术操心。他收获了一批有价值的影像,也收获了自己一段有意义的人生。
  贾玉川的影像具有极强的叙事性,跌宕起伏的人生被组织进严谨有序的结构,被摄者的信任和开放消除了拍摄的障碍和距离,所有的隐秘失去了遮挡,因此图片有了一种无须顾忌的逼近的视觉,一种直奔主题的犀利,大量的近景特写、难以想象的情节、细节给人感染和震撼的力量。我们还隐约感受到了一种来自拍摄者的急切的心情,那或许是面对一种需要拯救和帮助的生命的情感冲动。
  贾玉川的这些摄影专题在国内外广泛传播,感动了无数观众,充分实现了影像的价值,并且成为我国纪实摄影的经典个案。贾玉川为这些特殊的人生付出了很多,但也正是这些特殊的人成就了贾玉川的摄影。

 

Focus on the Fate of Special Life

In the 90s of last century, with photographer's eyes, Jia Yuchuan came to Shenzhen alone from the hometown ancient capital of Anyang. Shenzhen is at the forefront of China’s reform and opening up, his lens that facing the rural farmers before was transferred into facing night bars and stock market business of a modern city, under this kind of mental shock and a huge contrast, his photography road took a new start.
 
The period of reform and opening up, China opened its doors and was experiencing social transformation, the infinite possibilities of expansion creates an endless temptation in the city, various conflicts of values and lifestyle make the society become extremely complicated, and wrapped by turbulent time waves; even a bit of carelessness can change one’s life map. Jia Yuchuan lived in the bottom class, over a long period time of observing ordinary people and their life. From accidental talking to strangers to build a personal relationship to them, Jia Yuchuan finally put his focus on the group of people with disadvantages or special circumstances. This group of people exists on the edge of the society, they are destined by conventional, mainstream, public cultural values, they are it is scum in the eyes of the public; they are troubled and desperate lives. Jia Yuchuan does not stand in the position of public opinion and moral height to expose or criticize the "dark side" of the society, and does not have too much consideration of the artistic value of making these photos. His motivation is considerate, and with the attitude of respect, peace and goodwill. He was also attracted by the uniqueness of every human being, driven by a strong desire to explore their inner spirits; in the years of the tracking shot, he was impelled to lend a helping hand, to try to change their fate, this gives his photography the real significance of humanity.
 
In China, drug abuse has never been interrupted, for a long time the government has frustratingly made the fact opaque, until the 1990s, as the nation gradually opened, and formed a social related publicity, boycott, and combat. In 2003, female drug addict A Li entered into Jia Yuchuan’s lens. He knew her by a hairdresser that tells him a youth beauty who has been in drug addiction wear gloves because her finger has already started to fester. With the drug problem exposed at that time, people found that drug abuse has been so serious. How a young life has proceeded on this track? What is the living state of drug addicts? After communication, Jia Yuchuan won her agreement, and started to observe this beautiful life. A Li’s daily expenses and her source of money was prostitution, often became penniless because of drug expenses, her place was narrow, dark, and messy. But she had a desire of drug rehabilitation, and Jia Yuchuan lent a helping hand, helped the beautiful as voluntary detoxification personnel to enter rehab, and visited her for many times as well. A Li’s rehabilitation succeeded after three months, there are keen to help her find a job, and eventually the female was reborn. After Jia Yunchuan published his photography project of drug female beautiful story in newspapers and exhibitions, and caused strong repercussions from the public, more and more people were concerned the fate of the drug addicts group. However, the story ended with disappointment as the female girl could not get away from toxic friends circle temptation, soon fell again into drug addiction finally. But Jia Yuchuan believes that he always with a clear conscious.
 
Jia Yuchuan focus on another group is gay. The photographer was amazed at the beginning of and even felt sick about the topic. He got himself close to the secret circle (at the time in China), met with them, and photographed the following three couples with their approval. One was a forty year old anime painter at a company, he married his wife and had children, but later fell in love with another man; A cross-dressing actor (played "transvestite" performance) from rural county; the third was an artist who had children and a wife, a cross-dressing addict, dressed herself as a woman out for stimulation. Their "deformed" and "alternative" love and life, undertook an incredible pressure from the society. Entered into the details of their life, and their souls, Jia Yuchuan encountered a great change in understanding their emotions, from unaccepting to sympathizing with respects, and had a heartfelt admiration while trying to help with the social situation. Painter and his lovers couldnot afford the expensive operation fee, and by eating estrogen injections to change the physical characteristics; Artists made lots of money in business and had a car and house as well as still love dressed; The cross-dressing performers from the rural areas lacked of his mother's love while his father was sentenced to death, but he took care of his little boyfriend like a mother, he undertook all life pressures and dared to face anything, the only thing he would hope was back to his home village he, and made a grave for his family and see a real shemale in Thailand. The courage and resolve while they pursuing love, the persistence and determination while facing the pressure moved and shocked Jia Yuchuank: "I feel the multifaceted of human nature from them, saw good qualities; they are very brave men, I admire them."
 
Peng Shuilin entered Jia Yuchuan’s vision by accident. An interview in a hospital, I heard that here lives a man with no human body below the pelvis after a traffic accident, how could he alive? Jia Yuchuan instantly felt a strong vitality. Like an usual, only 60 cm tall, lying in a hospital bed for more than a year, when "half man" Peng Shuilin saw journalist Jia Yuchuan he complained of all difficulties, asked for help. Deeply compassionate Jia Yuchuan didn’t send him money; rather, he sent Peng Shuilin a pair of dumbbells. After helping to coordinate with the courts, the hospital solved the compensation of the accident and all medical expenses. In order to encourage Peng Shuilin to develop a confidence to start a new life, Jia Yuchuan mobilized the mutual help by convincing family, the hospital, and public media. Finally, Peng Shuilin crashed out of the despair, started an unyielding efforts, many foreign television reported, under the advocacy by Jia Yuchuan, Shenzhen organized a lasting love relay, helped Peng Shuilin to open a convenience store making a living; in addition, domestic and foreign companies as well as medical institutions helped Peng Shuilin install artificial limb, and treatment rehabilitation. Peng Shuilin quickly became well known across the country. In 2006, Jia Yuchuan’s photographic work on “Half Man” Peng Shuilin’s Story won a silver medal of the China News Character Photography Prize.
 
Special life has great charm for Jia Yuchuan, he took a different path in his career of photography. From a general performance of documentary photography in China, he was a photographer that explores life and human nature; he wanted to see how these special lives exist? He is a calm observer and thinker, but also a human altruism. It was impossible for Jia Yuchuan to do nothing when he sees such a thorough life of tragedy, so every time he became a calm observer, subjects become recipients, actually changed object life trajectory, which made his photography has the nature of the experiment, then he is like a justice's valiant, a close friend. Jia Yuchuam’ natural, sincere precisely fit the documentary photography in the world that care about the human suffering, care about the disadvantaged groups, and has a humanitarian tradition of maintaining human dignity, inherited the essence of humanistic care. American photographer, Donna Geraldine Ferraro, after witnessing family violence, she begin to pay close attention to those women beaten by their husbands and family, took a lot of shocking photos and published against domestic violence organizations, use a variety of methods to help unfortunate women, she won the Eugene Smith Humanitarian Photography Commemorative gold medal and other major international documentary photography awards. Documentary photography has many types, like Jia Yuchuan, Donna Phila such documentary photographers, in particular, more worthy of respect, they put themselves into the events in order to change the fate of their photographic objects, and went far beyond the original purpose of photography itself. In fact, in their role of changing the object’s trajectory life, their own life path has been changed as well. He harvested a batch of valuable image, also won himself a meaningful life.
 
Jia Yuchuan’s images have a strong sense of narrative, the ups and downs of life have been organized into a strict and orderly structure, subject of trust and openness eliminated barriers and distance, thus images have a vision of approximation, a sharpness to the point, a number of close shot features. We also vaguely felt an eager and an emotional impulse of facing with a need of help from other lives.
 
Jia Yuchuan’s various photography projects widely spread nationwide and abroad, which has moved millions of viewers, has realized the true value of his documentary images, and thus became a classic case in the documentary photography world in China. Jia Yuchuan has devoted so many of these special lives in the past, in return, all the experience contributed to the success of Jia Yuchuan’s photography.
