As one of China’s earliest internationally recognised photographers, Luo Yongjin has practised photographic collage since the late 20th century to the present day. His creative journey spans from his birthplace, Beijing, to Shanghai, where he has worked; from the mistshrouded regions of Jiangnan where he once resided, to the lofty Songshan Mountains where he now lives in seclusion. Across decades of creation, collage has never been merely a formal technique for him, but a unique way to anchor his personal life and engage with contemporary issues. Its contemporary significance lies hidden in pieced vistas forged by countless fragmented visual moments.

早年他以景观、建筑摄影闻名，面对北京、上海等急速变化的中国都市景象，他不满足于单帧拍摄，而是将建筑分解，把不同时段的光影、改造前后的样貌甚至不同季节的变化提取为视觉碎片，再拼接为全新的整体，让原本凝固的建筑拥有了流动的时间感。其后，他甚至将古画中的宫阙、文人雅集与现代市井街巷拼合为和谐的整体，在传统长卷形式中植入当代都市景观，让个人生活的地域印记和感悟，在传统与现代的对话中清晰显现。即便转向自然题材，这种对社会与时代的思考也从未消失：他把嵩山三十六亿年的地质面貌，和古代艺术家对山石的表述以及当下自身的观看叠加在一起，在不语的山石中，隐藏对时间和生命命题的辨析——自然的恒常与社会的速变，历史的厚重与当代的轻薄，都在片石片时的叠合中形成新的文章，让原本远离社会议题的自然题材，彰显当代人对自我、历史、时间的深层思考。

In his early career, Luo gained renown for his architectural photography. Faced with the rapidly evolving urban landscapes of Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities, he grew dissatisfied with singleshot documentation. Instead, he deconstructs buildings, extracting visual fragments of light and shadow across time periods, urban forms before and after renovation, and seasonal shifts, then reassembles them into new wholes. This lends fluid temporality to otherwise static architecture. Later, he even harmoniously collages palaces and literati gatherings from ancient paintings with modern urban streets, embedding contemporary cityscapes within the traditional handscroll format. Regional imprints and insights drawn from his personal life thus emerge vividly through dialogue between tradition and modernity. Even as he shifts his focus to natural subjects, his reflections on society and the era endure. He layers the 3.6billionyearold geological features of Songshan, depictions of mountains and rocks by ancient artists, and his own presentday observations. Within silent stones lies his meditation on time and life: the permanence of nature against the rapid flux of society, the weight of history contrasted with the ephemerality of modernity. These converge into new narratives woven from fragmented stones and fleeting moments, imbuing nature—once distant from social discourse—with profound contemporary reflections on self, history and time.

In an age of consumerdriven image saturation, where everyone is a photographer and artistic expression is overwhelmed by speed and quantity, Luo redefines photography through timeintensive collage. By recombining dozens or hundreds of partial images, he deconstructs wholes through fragments and reconstructs order within them. This creative method itself precisely echoes the fragmented lived experience of modern humanity.
